SUBDUING SELFISHNESS
What God gets to us, He wants to get through us to others
TEXT: Galatians 5:13-14
The God kind of love is not selfish and the Christian life is a life of continuous selfless service. God intends that we function as channels from which supply can flow, and not containers that only store up. God gets things to us to get them through us to others. As our cups run over, they must flow out to others. We have to understand that as members of the same body, we are the answers to each other’s prayers, knowing fully well that all that God wants to do requires the cooperation of men. If God says “yes”,don’t be the reason why the answer changes to “no”. Yield.
From the moment we received Christ, self-consciousness and the desire to serve oneself must gradually begin to fizzle out. We must start to seek the good and comfort of others even before ours. This is Christlike love. We are members of a body, stop thinking ‘I’ and start thinking ‘We’. See all that you have as a means to reach out to others. (See Romans 12:3-5). In fact, the more you get, the more you should give. One of the workings of the gospel is a thorough reorientation of the mind that produces community consciousness. Loosen your grip on things, be quick to dispense. The world teaches to prioritize oneself, but Scripture is clear in Philippians 2:3.
As we make our requests known, we must equally check the motive. Do you want to get that thing to serve others? Why do you want what you want? Why do you desire earnestly to walk in spiritual gifts? Is it to serve or to flaunt? If God gets your requests to you, can He get it through you? Do you want it to keep it, or to share it? The rivers of living water flowing out of your belly must flow to others.
